Personalized Legal Advocacy For Weathering Tough Financial Decisions
I am J. Scott Logan, an attorney who focuses my practice of law exclusively on helping my clients contending with foreclosure, consumer law issues or debt management. I offer confidential, compassionate and knowledgeable legal advocacy for bankruptcy and other debt relief options at a low cost.
When you call me for a free consultation, you will speak and meet only with me. I find that having one person follow a case from start to finish enables me to better represent my clients. It also gives clients a sense of security to be able to honestly answer questions and provide the whole picture despite their stressful situation. Together, we will discuss your options and strategize to chart out the best course of action in your circumstances. When there are court hearings, I will be the lawyer attending them.

The Services My Law Firm Offers
I have more than 15 years of experience assisting clients with stormy financial issues who may be seeking a loan modification, mediating a foreclosure, pursuing debt settlement or Chapter, 7, 11, 12 or 13 bankruptcy. I do not offer debt consolidation services, but I can put you in touch with a credible resource for this alternative.
I can help you resolve consumer law violations. Whether you are in bankruptcy or dealing with a debt collector, there are laws protecting your rights. Often creditors and debt collectors violate those rights. I will determine if you have a claim for monetary damages and pursue that claim on your behalf, frequently at no cost to you.
You may also contact my law firm for assistance with:
- Creditor representation – For individuals who have claims against other people in bankruptcy; there are time limits to take action to protect your creditor rights.
- Debt settlement – A common alternative to bankruptcy is debt settlement. Beware of debt settlement companies! Most offer an attractive monthly payment but do little or no work until you pay their fees which is around 15% of the total debt. In the meantime, creditors continue calling, charging interest and often file lawsuits. I accept lump sums in escrow, negotiate settlements (usually around 40-60%) and get the accounts closed quickly. However, any time your debt is subject to a settlement, you may get a 1099 for the amount forgiven, which the IRS considers income to you.
- Foreclosure defense – In Maine, homeowners have a right to mediation in foreclosure. I often modify the first mortgage through mediation, then file Chapter 13 to eliminate a second mortgage or home equity loan.
When it comes to your mortgage, you have several choices to consider. Depending on the nature of your circumstances, I will also look to potential solutions involving reinstatement, forbearance, repayment plans, renting out the property, deed-in-lieu of foreclosure or a short sale. Often I can get you cash for keys or money to help you relocate from a house you can no longer afford.
Are You Or A Loved One A Member Of The Military?
Are you or a loved one is member of the military and experiencing financial anxiety as a result of deployment? If you can demonstrate that your debt was accrued prior to your deployment, you may qualify for relief under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
A Continuing Commitment To Excellence
For more than 15 years, I have continued to maintain a well-respected reputation and my law practice has grown through client and attorney referrals. I have been selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list of Maine’s top rated bankruptcy lawyers in 2015-2017. Candidates for this accolade receive recognition by legal peers and independent review for their commitment and excellence in the field of bankruptcy. The Rising Star designation indicates the attorney has been practicing in their field of law for under 10 years or is under the age of 40. Less than 2.5% of bankruptcy lawyers in Maine are included on the list annually.
